Some shoots go exactly to plan. And then there are shoots like Amy and Zak's, where the unexpected turns into the best moment of the day, and the only reason you caught it was because you happened to have the right gear on you.

Amy & Zak's proposal shoot, captured on the Insta360 X5

The Setup

Zak had organised a beach shoot as a surprise proposal for Amy. She had no idea. My job was to make it feel natural, get them relaxed, shoot some portraits, and have the camera ready when Zak got down on one knee.

That part went beautifully. Amy said yes, obviously. But what happened next was something none of us planned for.

A Whale Showed Up

I'm not joking. Right there, off the coast, a whale surfaced. In the middle of a proposal shoot. On one of the most emotionally charged moments of these two people's lives, the ocean decided to put on its own show.

I had the Insta360 X5 with me, not as my main camera, just along for the ride, and I was so glad I did. My main setup was trained on the couple, as it should be. But the X5 caught the whole scene. The proposal, the emotion, and the whale in the background, all in one frame. You genuinely couldn't script it.

"The X5 caught the whole scene, the proposal, the emotion, and the whale. All in one frame. You genuinely couldn't script it."

Why 360 Made the Difference

This is what the X5 is built for. When something unexpected happens, and in photography, it always does eventually, you don't want to be scrambling to reframe or swap lenses. The 360° capture means everything is already in the shot. I pulled the footage back into the app later and reframed it exactly how I wanted. The whale, the couple, the beach, all of it.

That's the thing about the X5 that I keep coming back to: it gives you a safety net for the moments you can't predict. And in my line of work, those are often the moments that matter most.

If You Do Shoots Like This

Whether you're shooting proposals, elopements, or any kind of emotional moment outdoors, bring a second camera that can capture everything. You won't always get a whale, but you'll always be glad you had the coverage.

The Insta360 X5 is what I reach for. It's small enough not to be a hassle, and the footage quality is genuinely impressive.
